I have worked from home since May 2018 and absolutely love it. I am a software dev and (now) own my own business. I have to talk to people with video chats, phone calls, Slack (MS Teams), email, etc. I do not miss the commute at all, losing 10 hrs a week. I see my family when they get home. I work as I need to. If I want to be around people, I can go out to the grocery store / coffee shop / new library down by the water.
It works for me. It definitely does not work for everyone. I know folks that want interaction. I know people who get too distracted, and thankfully they can recognize it. I know some who do the hybrid thing mentioned here and mix it up.
I started when my twins were going to middle school and I could get them there, pick them up, etc. and be more flexible. It worked well for me then and still does in 2024. And COVID did not interrupt my work, just all other aspects of life...I have a separate room we made an office. I have good Internet. I have windows. I have a good computer. And I had supervisors that let me do my job. And I worked with a team during the work day or off hours if we scheduled it, so people can also have flexibility.
You probably will not know if it works for you until you do it. Just like a lot of other things in life. For me it did.
